Making sure you
choose the right 3PL vendor
When you are in need of a 3PL vendor whether you are
changing vendors or are conducting your first 3PL vendor search, going through
the process with specific goals in mind will greatly reduce the risk of finding
a 3PL vendor that is not right for your company. There is some essential
information to consider while searching to evaluate and narrowing down
potential providers. Finding the right 3PL vendor that becomes an extension of
your business, is trustworthy, easy to work with, and has the best interest of
your company in mind will be the end result when you take the time with the
right process.
Your first step is to create a list of 3PL vendors that
currently service the same type of companies as yours. By looking at 3PL
vendors that are already shipping product similar to yours and have comparable
business models you are assured they already have experience shipping the type
of product you need to ship.
Once you have your list, you will want to concentrate on the
Formal Request for Proposal (RFP). When creating this, you will need to include
pertinent information about your company so that the 3PL will be able to give
you accurate information on how they can service you. Things to include would
be annual statistics that contains monthly details to show seasonal highs and
lows, your projected growth for the next two to three years, and your
performance level standards. This will give the potential 3PL an opportunity to
make sure they can handle your orders regardless of the time of year,
information as to whether or not they will be able to handle your needs for the
next few years, and give them a clear indication of what you expect of them.
When interviewing potential 3PL vendors, take a look at
their reporting systems. Do they have systems in place that will give you and
your customers the information and support that is needed? You will also want
to ask for a list of current clients who have been with them for a variety of
time and contact those clients to get a better picture as to whether or not the
3PL vendor has successfully been servicing their accounts. When doing this,
make sure you have a prepared list of questions to ensure you are evaluating
the 3PL vendors equally.
Site visits will be in order for those you are seriously
considering. Once again, have a list prepared of what you want to see at the
facility and what you want to ask. When walking through their warehouse, look
for an organized warehouse that is clean and well maintained. Organization plays
a huge role in the efficiency of a 3PL vendor and the more organized, the more
money you will save.
When you are ready to compare the pricing you have been
given, you will notice that it is not given in a consistent format. To
accurately compare each 3PL vendor you will want to look at the cost per order
analysis. This will give you the opportunity to compare vendors against each
potential 3PL vendor as well as your own internal costs.
When you have looked at all of the 3PL vendors and have
collected all of the information you will have a clearer picture at the pros
and cons of each potential 3PL that you are considering. By using the same
criteria to evaluate each 3PL and taking the time to go through all of the
steps needed, you will be better equipped at choosing the right company that
will then become an extension of your company creating a flawless order
fulfillment process.
